Michael Magner has been Barnstable High School ’s first and only varsity Head Wrestling Coach. He began coaching the school’s first varsity wrestling team during the 2003-04 season. During this time, he has been the driving force behind the Red Raiders rapid success.
In just the program’s second varsity season, coach Magner was named the Massachusetts Wrestling Coach-of-the-Year by Masswrestling.com. He helped the Barnstable Wrestling team capture a share of it’s first OCL League Championship and lead them to the Division 1 South Sectional Semi-finals in the Team State Dual Championships in just the program’s third varsity season and first as a funded program.
Besides leading the high school team, coach Magner founded and coached the Barnstable Recreation Department’s Youth Wrestling Program in 1999 - 2002. He also founded and coached the Cape Cod Wrestling Club for the past seven years. He was the Director of the Cape Cod Wrestling Camps in the summer of 2003 and 2004.
Before coming to Barnstable High School , coach Magner served as Assistant Wrestling Coach at Lowell High School , Methuen High School , Whitman-Hanson High School , and Torrey Pines High School in Del Mar California .
In 1995, Magner earned his M. Ed. from Bridgewater State College in School Counseling grades 5 – 12. A 1992 graduate of Slippery Rock University , PA , with a B.S. degree in Sports Management, Magner wrestled for this NCAA Division 1 wrestling program under the tutelage of legendary coach Fred Powell. In his junior year, Magner received a knee injury that put an end to his collegiate wrestling career.
A native of Plymouth , MA., Magner was a 3X State Qualifier, captain of his team at Plymouth-Carver High School , and a member of the Massachusetts Junior Olympic team in his senior year.
