Meet THE Coaches
Barnstable Wrestling
is lucky to have great coaches. Headed by Mike Magner, this
team of knowledgeable coaches balance the need for team and
individual excellence while emphasizing academic
achievement.
Head Coach - Michael Magner
Michael Magner
has been
Barnstable
High School
’s first and only varsity Head Wrestling Coach. He began
coaching the school’s first varsity wrestling team during
the 2003-04 season. During this time, he has been the
driving force behind the Red Raiders rapid success.
  
In just the
program’s second varsity season, coach Magner was named the
Massachusetts Wrestling Coach-of-the-Year by
Masswrestling.com. He helped the Barnstable Wrestling team
capture a share of it’s first OCL League Championship and
lead them to the Division 1 South Sectional Semi-finals in
the Team State Dual Championships in just the program’s
third varsity season and first as a funded program.
Besides leading
the high school team, coach Magner founded and coached the
Barnstable Recreation Department’s Youth Wrestling Program
in 1999 - 2002. He also founded and coached the Cape Cod
Wrestling Club for the past seven years. He was the
Director of the Cape Cod Wrestling Camps in the summer of
2003 and 2004.

In 1995, Magner
earned his M. Ed. from Bridgewater State College in School
Counseling grades 5 – 12.
A 1992 graduate

Slippery Rock University

PA
, with a B.S. degree in Sports Management, Magner wrestled
for this NCAA Division 1 wrestling program under the
tutelage of legendary coach Fred Powell. In his junior
year, Magner received a knee injury that put an end to his
collegiate wrestling career.
A native of
Plymouth
, MA., Magner was a 3X State Qualifier, captain of his team
at
Plymouth-Carver
High School
, and a member of the Massachusetts Junior Olympic team in
his senior year.
Assistant
Coach - Joe Wilson (The Mountain Man)
  
Coach Wilson
joined the Barnstable Wrestling Staff for the 2005-06 season
and made an immediate impact.
Wilson
has brought his hardnosed intensity and outstanding
technique to the Red Raider Wrestling Program. His
commitment and dedication to the team has been notable.
Coach Wilson
hiked the Appalachian Trail from
Maine
to
Georgia
in 2004, a total of approximately 2,200 miles after
graduating from college.
A 2004 graduate
from the College of Charleston, NC, Wilson earned BS degrees
Anthropology and Archeology. He has minor in Biology,
Geology, and Environmental Science. He has worked as a
Granby Camp Clinician for the Martin’s
Granby
School
in
Virginia
.
He attended
Morehead
High School
in
North Carolina
where he was a member of two State Championship teams. He
graduated from
Morehead
High School
in 2000.
Youth Coach - Rob Dawson

Coach Dawson has
been the Head Coach of Barnstable Recreation Department’s
Youth Wrestling Program for the past four years. He was a
1992 Olympian, 2x Silver Medalist Pan Am Games, 2nd
Place Senior World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling, 7 time
National Champion, he defeated Olympic Gold Medalist Kendall
Cross 2 out of 3x’s they wrestled internationally, he won
the Bay State Games Open Division at the age of forty. He
was the Former Head Assistant Wrestling Coach at
Brown
University
for seven years.

Youth Coach - Mark Barrett

He has coached the youth wrestling program for the past six
years. His tireless devotion to the Barnstable Wrestling
Program is commendable. In the summer of 2005, he became
the oldest wrestler at the age of forty-nine to win the Bay
State Games Open Division. He wrestled at
Bucknell
University
and graduated in 1980. A native of
Stamford
,
CT
he graduated from King’s School in 1976.
